Assessment and testing
During our spirometry lung function test, employees are asked to take a deep breath and then exhale as hard and fast as they can into a device called a spirometer. This device measures the amount of air you breathe out and how quickly you exhale. They may be asked to repeat the test several times for accuracy.
After the test has been done, the healthcare professional will review the results immediately and send them for further analysis. Results are typically compared to predicted values based on factors such as age, height and sex. This helps determine if there are any abnormalities in lung function. Depending on the results, further tests or follow-up appointments may be recommended or a referral made.

How long does a lung function test take?
A spirometry test typically takes about 15 to 30 minutes to complete, including preparation time and the actual test. The test itself usually only takes a few minutes. We can perform spirometry testing on-site so you can keep appointments short and not waste time travelling. Â Â Â Â Â
Do workers need to prepare for a spirometry test?
We ask people to avoid the following before their lung function test:
- Heavy meals
- Smoking for 24 hours
- Alcohol and caffeine
- Strenuous exercise
We also ask that they wear loose clothing, as tight clothing can restrict breathing.
Is spirometry testing safe?
Spirometry testing is considered safe and non-invasive. However, it may cause temporary discomfort or dizziness in some people. This is because spirometry testing involves breathing in deeply and then exhaling forcefully. The act of taking a deep breath and exhaling forcefully can temporarily alter the levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the body, which can affect blood flow and circulation.

If lung conditions are identified through spirometry testing or other diagnostic methods, the next steps will depend on the specific condition and its severity. We may suggest regular monitoring and lifestyle changes backed up with education, and/or we may make a referral to a specialist, such as a respiratory physician (pulmonologist).
